universal sign of accessibility

Maptionnaire is the community engagement platform that empowers urban planners engage with the entire community. We believe that digital participation should be open to all, regardless of ability. Our commitment to accessibility is a core priority, ensuring that our platform follows the highest international standards and best practices.

WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA compliance

Maptionnaire is built on a foundation of universal design. We adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and 2.2 Level AA. These guidelines are the internationally recognized benchmark for digital inclusion, ensuring our platform meets or exceeds statutory requirements worldwide.

This includes alignment with major national and regional requirements, including:

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (including 2024 Title II updates)
  • The European Accessibility Act (EAA)
  • Section 508 (U.S. Federal)
  • AODA (Canada)

To ensure we maintain these standards, Maptionnaire also undergoes regular accessibility testing by independent third parties.

Accessibility with mapping questions

While Maptionnaire ensures that all text, buttons, and navigation elements are accessible, digital interactive maps present a unique challenge. Because a background map is a complex visual grid of coordinates, it cannot be "read" by a screen reader in a way that provides an equal experience.

To remain compliant with accessibility laws, we ensure that it's easy for Maptionnaire users to provide "equivalent facilitation" when designing their surveys and Project Pages. This means that when you ask a question on a map, you can also provide a non-map-based way for a respondent to provide the same information.

If you're interested in the technical details for how this works in the platform, check out our Help Center's article on essential practices for accessibility. You can also find additional information in our compliance policy.

Maptionnaire is continuously improving

Accessibility is a continuous process, not a one-time goal. As web technologies and assistive tools evolve, we constantly update our platform to remove barriers and enhance the user experience.
